Not all animals with the word fish in their names count as fish.
Though their names may suggest otherwise, cuttlefish, starfish, and jellyfish aren’t actually fish. Generally-speaking, fishes must have skulls, gills, and fins. Surprisingly, though, not all fishes have proper spines.

Even Catfish are finicky
Taste Buds ? Catfish have a more refined sense of flavor than humans. Our 10,000 taste buds may seem like a lot, but catfish can have as many as 175,000. This helps them find the exact location of their next meal.

Commentary: This is a great time of year. Set your GOAL high by targeting Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. Trout fishing is excellent.

Skeena River: Water is a quite dirty and really not fishable. Apparently the Bulkley River and other tribs are coloured up. The spring run Steelhead are in the river now. Plus Trout and Dolly Varden Char. Early Chinook (King) Salmon are coming in now. Catching Steelhead and Chinook on the same day is possible. Just need some clean water to get at them.

Kalum River: The lower and upper sections are in good shape. The water is coming up slowly. These are the conditions we like. A good run of Steelhead are in the river now. Many of them have spawned and are now kelts heading back to the ocean. These fish should be handled with extra care. Chinook fishing is excellent. We should be able to catch both Steelhead and Chinook in the same day. Wow is this fun or what!

Regarding Chinook, here are some very important regulations:
Upstream of signs below lower canyon:
- Jan 01 - May 24 limits 4 per day, none over 65cm. In other words 'catch and release' the big ones.
- May 25 - Dec 31 No fishing for Chinook.

Lakelse River: The water is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead, and Trout is fair. Chinook will be coming in soon.

Zymoetz (Copper) River: Water is too dirty to fish. Facts: Last year we had a record run of Steelhead, lets hope at least we have another good run this year. The fly rods work extremely well in this river. Fly fishing suggestion: Kamloops Dragon fly rod, 10’ Kamloops fly reel, AFTMA #8line. Backing Dragon Fly “Bright Orange” 30lb, 150 yard spool. Fly line SA Sharkskin Steelhead WF-8-F. Where: Sockeye fishermen are working the bars across from the Copper River. Fly fishing is the choice of many anglers on this river. Wading with quality Simms waders and accessories is the way to go. A friend of mine is very happy with his new Islander fly reel. Trophy XL fly rod, Cortland Line and Maxima Tippet . Tip: Fly fishermen please wade safely by using a wading staff. Trophy XL makes a nice one in 7 sections. Easily folds up and stores in a pouch on the waist.

Kitimat River: Steelhead are coming in now. Fishing has been excellent. More and more anglers are hitting the river. Trout fishing is excellent! The odd early Chinook have come in also.
