ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is still hanging only a mile off the beach. The fishing is very similar to last week. The tuna and marlin are scarce, but the sailfish action is very good.

The main spot of fish is only about 3 miles directly in front of Zihuatanejo Bay. A lot of boats are getting back before noon, with 4 or 5 sailfish releases.

Rooster fishing is still outstanding and Arturo, on the panga Janneth, is keeping up his weekly blistering pace with 8 roosters released in one day. All the fish were between 30 and 45 pounds.

In some respects, this week was a milestone for conservation. At least it is a step in the right direction. Federal authorities arrested two commercial pangeros, using Zihuatanejo Bay as their home port, with 13 sailfish and a long line of over 2 miles in length. All evidence was transferred for prosecution in Acapulco.

In the past, local enforcement just has not been effective at all. This is the first time the
Feds have stepped in and are taking control, and the word is spreading fast.

Wide open offshore and inshore fishing was the order of the day in Ixtyapa Zihuatanejo as the weather finally cleared up enough for our fleet get into full swing. Captain Jamie Morales, owner of the Vamonos fleet reported his group form Mcallen Texas, landed 22 SAILFISH in three days while fishing aboard the Vamonos 1,2 & 3. Angler Alfred Palomino fishing aboard the Leydy with Captian Candelerio landed 3 SAILFISH and 1 YELLOWFIN TUNA on his first day offshore. First time fly fishing angler to Ixtapa Zihuatnejo, Mr. Mile Mcfall fishing aboard our newest super panga, Sirena, raised 9 SAILFISH, hooking 3 and landing his first Pacific SAILFISH on a fly. All of the action took place in three days offshore. Angler Larry Chandler fishing with Captain Temo on the Secuestro landed 3 SAILFISH and 1 YELLOWFIN TUNA in two days offshore and 9 ROOSTERFISH, 1 YELLOWTAIL JACK, 7 NEEDLEFISH and 10 BONITOS in Two days of inshore fishing with Captain Adolofo on the Dos Hermanos 1. ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL:  The 80º blue water is only a mile from the beach. Fishing has been very good for our normal “bread and butter” species: roosterfish, jack crevalle and sailfish. But, the marlin and tuna have pulled a disappearing act.
The Schlagel family, of the San Francisco Bay area, fished with captain Cali on the panga “Zapatito Gordo” and released 5 sailfish. However, most boats are averaging a 2 or 3 sailfish day.
The roosterfish action has really heated up, with Arturo on the panga “Janeth” recording the best day we have had for a long time. He got 14 roosters for his clients, averaging from about 30- to 45-pounds. The fish were all taken on surface poppers and slow trolled live bait.  Anival, the 1st mate of the “Don Gordo,” took clients out to the White Rocks and nailed a 60 pound rooster, 28 pound pargo, and several large jacks. (Anival has taken over the helm of the “Don Gordo” now that Captain Poli has his new boat, the “Don Gordo II”.)

It has been a week of dancing between the raindrops and dodging a few storms that have moved into the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area. With unstable weather the fish became a bit more scattered and more difficult to find yet some days produced some good results.
Mr. Bob Backman's group who fished with Captain Cheva on the Dos Hermanos 2 landed 6 SAILFISH and lost another 6 on a fly in one day offshore. Avid Fly angler Miles Mcfall fishing aboard our newest super panga ' Seriena ' with Captain Erik and first mate Kenny, had 11 SAILFISH teased to the boat, hooking 5 in three days of fishing. Captain Chiro on the Vamonos 3 reported m5 SAILFISH hookups in 2 days offshore with the biggest fish going just over 100 lbs, caught by Texas angler Mr. Carlos. First time Visitors to I/Z , Mr. & Mrs. John Cliff finished there week aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 by landing 4 SAILFISH in One Day. Returning Angler, Dan Walden, also fishing with Captain Adolofo landed 10 SAILFISH, 1 SHARK and 10 BONITOS in three offshore days. Captain Jose on the La Bamba reported landing 1 SAILFISH with Client Mr. Merzel from New York. In one day offshore. Mr. Steve Takagi's group fishing aboard the Moramay caught 1 SAILFISH and lost one other then turned their attention to inshore where they scored 12 ROOSTERFISH, 1 BIG EYE JACK and 1 RAINBOW RUINNER in three day of fishing with Captain Arturo on the Janeth and 1 ROOSTERFISH and a handful of BONITOS aboard the LEYDY. The offshore fishing has moved to within 7 miles of the beach but the weather has prevented any consistent fishing from setting up. At last report the weather was clearing nicely and the sea conditions were becoming more friendly.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is only about 3 miles off the beach. The fishing is rated as good for all species. However, we did get a couple of days of stormy weather this week, making it too tough to try to fish.

The rainy season has arrived and within a week, the surrounding will be green again. This is the time of the year when the blue water (read game species) comes in very close to the beach.

While guiding BOF client Michael Bebee of Marin, Calif., Mike took 6 nice yellowfin tuna. We were on the panga “Zapatito Gordo” with Captain Cali. All the fish were caught casting into the boils among the birds and porpoise. We located the school of fish only 7 miles from Zihuatanejo Bay.

Sailfish action is seeing about a 2 to 3 fish per boat average. Captain Ruben on the “Yellowfin II” came over and joined us on the tuna school after releasing 3 sailfish for his clients. He ended his day by 10 with the 3 sails and 4 nice tuna.

The roosters and jack crevalle are here also, but the offshore storms have the beaches in a rough condition with the high surf. Adolpho, on the panga “Dos Hermanos,” and Marcos on the panga “Oceana” did manage to find good concentrations of both. Adolpho got his roosters and jacks 26 miles south, and Marcos got several large jacks just in front of Ixtapa and the marina Ixtapa.

The On coming Full moon had little or no effect on the offshore fishing as the SAILFISH bite turned up a notch last week. The inshore fishery alive with Yellowtail Jack, Bonitos and Big Eye was void of any consistent Roosterfish action which is a surprise for this time of year. Leading the offshore pack was captain Adolofo and Captain Cheva who fished 5 days with Mr. Richard Engles Group. In that time the group landed 39 SAILFISH, 35 YELLOWFIN TUNA ( SCHOOL SIZE ),4 ROOSTERFISH, 3 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 38 BONITOS and 7 NEEDLEFISH. Chicago Anglers, Fred Aigner's group fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2, Secuestro and Moramay landed 6 SAILFISH, 2 DORADOS, 10 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 4 BIG EYE JACKS, 30 BONITOS and 4 NEEDLEFISH in 2 days of fishing. Mr. Lo fishing aboard the Janeth for two days landed 5 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 8 BOINITOS, 3 NEEDLE FISH, 2 SAILFISH and missed two others. Mr. Hustrulid fishing aboard the Marlin Azul landed 2 SAILFISH in one day offshore. First time visitor's to I/Z, John and Sue Cliff fishing aboard the Secuestro landed 4 YELLOFIN TUNA, and 1 SAILFISH on a fly then landed 4 BIG EYE JACKS on another day inshore. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff also fished aboard the Dos Hermanso 2 for 2 offshore days landing 6 SAILFISH and loosing 1 other. Mr. Brad Miller and Mike Cummings fishing aboard the La Bamba with Captain Jose, Landed 4 SAILFISH and lost 2 others in one offshore day and while fishing with Captain Franciso on the Marfel landed 1 ROOSTERFISH, 8 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 8 BONITOS and 4 NEEDLEFISH. Angler Mr. Silva fishing with Captain Jose landed 6 SAILFISH in 2 days offshore. Buffalo angler Larry Kent landed an estimated 200 Lb Blue Marlin and then had anther Big Fish eat Two live bonitos at the same time, hooking the fish on two separate rods at the same time. As luck would have it the fish, estimated to be over 400 lbs., was able to throw both hooks. The live bait was being slow trolled using Zwing downriggers. ( wwwzwingdownrigger.com )

The offshore and Inshore action continues to heat up as warmer water conditions and favorable weather has moved into the area. Offshore the boats are averaging 3 - 4 SAILFISH per day with some good shots at nice MARLIN & TUNA. The Cecil Wider group fishing aboard the Vamonos 2 with captain Jamie landed 2 SAILFISH and a 220 lb BLUE MARLIN on the last day of fishing. Captain Chiro on the Vamonos 3 led angler Mr Peinado to 1 SAILFISH and 1 STRIPED MARLIN in one day of fishing. Captain Chiro also found 2 SAILFISH for the Celil Wider group. Cabela's Outdoor Adventure Client Mike Ricketts looking for a big Marlin fished with Captain Chiro for three days landing 6 SAILFISH a 2 YELLOWFIN TUNA. Captain Jose on the LA Bamba fishing with first time visitors Brad Miller and Mike Cummings landed the duo 4 SAILFISH on their first day offshore and then led angler Kim Kaszuba to 3 SAILFISH in one day. Returning winner of Last year's Ixtapa Zihuatanejo total Tag & Release tournament, from Buffalo New York, Larry Kent landed 7 YELLOWFIN TUNA and 1 SAILFISH in one day with Tournament winning captain Adolfo Espinosa. Turning his atrtention to inshore Captain Adolofo led the Fred Aigner group from Chicago , to 13 ROOSTERFISH and 2 YELLOWTAIL JACKS in two days of fishing. The remaining angler in Mr Aigner's group fishing aboard the Secuestro & Moramay landed 3 SAILFISH, 2 ROOSTERFISH, 9 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 12 YELLOWFIN TUNA. First time visitors to the area Mr. Angle's group fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 & 2 landed 13 SAILFISH, 4 YELLOWFIN TUNA, and 4 ROOSTERFISH in two days of fishing. Mr. Mark Turcat fishing with Captain Luis on the Marea Azul landed 6 SAILFISH in 2 days offshore. Mr. Tony Pearce fishing aboard the LEYDY landed 8 SAILFISH, 2 ROOSTERFISH and 2 CHULAS in 4 days of fishing. Mr. Wilkinson also fishing with Captain Candelerio landed 1 YELLOWFIN TUAN and pull the hooks on a nice Blue MARLIN. Mr. Burguiere's group fishing aboard the Intruzza and Liberty landed 3 sailfish and lost two others in one day offshore. The blue water is within 15 miles and the inshore fishery, especially in the Petitlan area, continues to improve.

IN GENERAL: The IGFA announced this week that our “Jacks or Better” Roosterfish-on-the-Fly tournament will be one of the qualifying events and the winner will be invited to compete in their Inshore Championship in April, 2005. http://igfa.org/tournaments/event-display.cfm?eveid=441 Don’t miss out on the first ever Rooster-on-the Fly event in Zihuatanejo. http://www.bajafly.com/jacksorbetter.htm

The 78º blue water remains at 12 miles and the blue marlin bite is still strong. Each day about 1 in every 4 boats is getting a shot at a marlin. When you consider they are not targeting marlin, but rather pulling smaller baits for the sailfish, those are fairly decent numbers. The sailfish action is holding steady at about two fish per boat per day.

The inshore action has really taken off. While guiding Baja on the Fly fishing client Steve Walser of Soulsbyville, Calif., (Note: Soulsbyville is a mountain town in the California Gold Country in case you didn’t recognize it) he was hooking a fish about every 5 minutes. We were fishing the near point at the White Rocks and in the mixed bag were black skipjack tuna, jack crevalle, and rainbow runners.

The lasting effects of the full moon period coupled with cooler water kept the offshore fishing from developing any consistency but despite those conditions some good catches were reported.
