Conditions have been poor. A cold green water current has moved in and pushed the blue water out to the 40 mile mark. And even out there the guys are only accounting for five or six football tuna. It would be safe to say over 80% of the fleet is not catching any bluewater species.

The only bright side is the inshore action for the hard fighting jack crevalle. Six to 10 fish a day has been normal. Most of these 15- to 22-pound fish are being taken on trolled Rapalas, but the fly casters are scoring as well

Blue Marlin are the big story this week. There have been (literally) a ton of them caught. There are about 5 hook-ups a day for the fleet on these 250 pound average fish, with several of them over 400 pounds. One fish boated this week was almost 700 pounds. Yesterday, Mike Griffen of Alaska, wanted a few more hours of fishing with Captain Poli on the Don Gordo before he had to catch a flight home. At only 4 miles outside Zihuatanejo Bay he released a sailfish, and a few minutes later, hooked into a 350 pound marlin.

The fleet is averaging about 2 sailfish a day, but this will definitely improve as we go into the dark of the moon period next week.

One large 75 pound rooster was taken this week at the White rocks. It ate a slow-trolled live mackerel. Not much else has been reported inshore.

Lots of fishing activity was reported last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo as the historical stats indicate a prime time for Pacific Sailfish. Captain Chiro aboard the Bloody Hook reported 2 SAILFISH in 1 day for the Gary Berkholtz group and a 4 SAILFISH day angler Mr James. Mr Berkoltz's group also fishing aboard the Marea Azul and Illusion landed 4 more SAILFISH Captain Chiro also fished 5 days with retruning fly angler Mr Jerry Wendrovsky raising 22 SAILFISH transferring 7 to the fly hooking all 7 and landing 2. Mr Wendrovsky also reported raising an estimated 250 lb. BLue Marlin that would not make the transfer to his fly. Mr. Wendrovsky also ventured south for an inshore shot at a Rooster on a fly with Captain Hiram on the La Hawaiiana. The duo found a school of big roosterfish in the 50 lb class feeding a bit offshore and got one to crash the fly. The shock tippet abraided by one of the diving frigate birds caused the fish to break off. Our annual fly fishing group led by Mr Russ Hampton fishing 7 days aboard the super pangas, Janeth, Llamarada, Secuestro, Marfel, Angler, Grand Jefe , Dos Hermanos 2, Zapatito Gordo. Sailfish and Monica raised 182 SAILFISH incuding 8 Blue Marlin, Many fish were transferred and hooked but only 18 were successfully landed and released. Our fly anglers reported sluggish activity from the SAILFISH as the water temps were a bit on the lower than normal side which is also indicative by the number of marlin raised this year. Captain Adolofo on the Dos Hermanos 1 fishing with Returning angler Tim Hoare from London reported 14 SAILFISH, 11 YELLOWFIN TUNA, 1 DORADO and 15 JACKS. FInishing the week with Mr Hoare Captain Adolofo repoted the Zihua Grand SLam Landing a SAILFISH, BLUE MARLIN, DORADO and a YELLOWFIN TUNA in a single day. Captain Adolofo also fishing with Angler Bob Simon landed 7 SAILFISH in 2 days of fishing. Captain Candelerio aboard the Leydy fishing 2 days with European Angler Mr SOualssol landed 4 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO. Captain Jose on the La Bamba reported 3 SAILFISH and 4 DORADO in 4 days for Angler MR Thorn. Captain Gilberto on the Moramay reported 7 SAILFISH and 2 DORADO for Returning angler Mr Doug Clark. Captain Morales on the Vamonos 1 and captain Javier on the Marlin Azul reported 12 SAILFISH, 1 BLUE MARLIN and 2 DORADOS in 3 days with Mr Adams Group. Captain Arturo on the Janeth posted 4 SAILFISH and 2 YELLOWTAIL JACKS in 2 days of fishing for angler Mr Smart. Offshore conditions continue to change with the blue water and most of the action occurring between 20 - 25 miles offshore. By week's end the action picked up and came closer to shore ( Inside 7 miles.) Late February into March and April has historically been our BIG FISH months for Marlin and Tuna. Please call our office for availability.

The full moon caused a high tide and strong winds made conditions early in the week difficult. Some below average catches, for this time of year, were posted during the week. We are coming out of the full moon phase, and those clients who fished for three or more days ended up with some very good numbers. Those who gave it a one day try may have done well . . . or maybe not.

The 82º blue water is a very short run, and we are averaging about two to three sailfish a day per boat. Plus, the blue marlin are showing up in the catches for an average of about one blue for every six boats.

Both the panga “Gitana” with Santiago, and his brother Adan, on the “Gitana II” had some respectable numbers this week. Minnesotan Bill Berg – down for a break from winter’s ice and snow – released 11 sailfish and two yellowfin tuna for four days of fishing with Santiago. Mel Walberg and Troy Courneya each fished three days with Adan, releasing a total of 12 sailfish and one dorado.

The inshore action for fly-rodders has been best for the black skipjack tuna and green jacks.

The onset of the full moon caused a decline in the SAILFISH bite but our captains are still reporting good sea conditions with lots of bait in the area. Delaware angler Mr Walker, fishing aboard the Bloody Hook with Captain Chiro for 2 days of offshore fishing landed 7 SAILFISH and lost 1 Marlin. Captain Chrio also reported a 2 SAILFISH day for angler Mr McKee and a 4 SAILFISH day for angler Mr Pex. Captain Jose on the La Bamba posted a 1 SAILFISH 1 DORADO day for New York angler Joe Calandra and 5 SAILFISH and 2 DORADO in 2 days for angler Mr Donnelly. Mr Calandra also spent 1 inshore day with Captain Adolofo landing 2 ROOSTERFISH and 7 YELLOWTAIL JACKS. Captain Jose finished the week with a single SAILFISH for angler Mr Adams. Returning angler Bob Biagi fishing aboard the Gran Jefe with Captain Luis landed 6 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO, 10 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 30 BONITOS in 3 days of fishing. Eurpoean angler Mr Canieri fishing 3 days offshore with Captain Adolofo landed 5 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO. Mr Phil Massimino's group fishing 2 days in Puerto Vincentee Guerrero on the super pangas, Gran Jefe, Janeth, Secuestro and Dos Hermanos 2 Reported 6 SAILFISH, 6 DORADOS, 2 ROOSTERFISH, 1 CHULA, 1 SPANISH MACKEREL and 57 BONITO on Light tackle. Pennsylvania angler Larry Slachta fishing aboard the Secuestro landed 2 SAILFISH in one offshore day. Captain Candelerio fishing with European angler Mr. Soulassol reported 2 SAILFISH, 3 DORADOS, 1 ROOSTERFISH and 12 YELLOWTAIL JACKS in 3 days of fishing. Captain Francisco aboard the Marianana reported 4 SAILFISH and 25 BONITOS in 5 DAYS. The blue water is within 5 miles however the affect of the full moon was felt last week. With the passing of the moon activity is expected to increase once again.

Even though the 80º blue water is only four miles off the beach, most boats averaged only one or two sailfish a day. Fly-fishers had it even rougher, with only about one decent shot a day. But, the fish are here, and I fully expect things to change 100% next week.

A very notable couple of days were posted by Santiago on the panga “Gitana.” Bill Gray and his wife, from South Carolina, fished two days with Santiago and released 10 sailfish.

Four of our better inshore pangas made the 40 mile run south to Papanoa. Staying down there, they hammered the water for three days and only had two roosterfish for their efforts. It is safe to say the roosters have left the area, and probably will not be back until May.

Adolpho, on the panga Dos “Hermanos” fished about 12 miles north of Zihuatanejo, catching 27 large jack crevalle and five sierra for two days of fishing. Adolpho told me it is an ideal situation for the fly-fisher. The jacks are slamming the popper teaser all the way back to the boat. His blue water effort for three days produced five sailfish and one dorado.

 Jan 15, 2006; 09:11AM - An Outstanding Week
 Category:  Mexico Ixtapa Zihuatanejo

We have really enjoyed an outstanding week. The 80º blue water is almost on the beach, and the sailfish action has been great. Almost every boat in the fleet was averaging 8 to 10 sailfish raised a day. This gives a lot of shots to the fly fisherman, producing at least two to three hooked fish a day.

Conventional gear fishermen are getting a per boat average of 3 to 4 sailfish a day, with some boats getting 7 or 8. The blue marlin are still coming in at about 3 a day for the 25 boat fleet. Dorado have been sporadic. Some days they are here in abundance, with some boats getting 4 or 5 of the fish averaging about 25 to 30 pounds, and then they are gone for a day or two.

The Yellowfin tuna are breezing in and out now. But, they are very skittish. With the fish crashing the surface, and the birds diving on the baits, we slowly move in on the school, only to have them sink into the depths. The tuna action should pick up considerably this next week or two.

Some notable catches:
Arturo on the panga Janeth made the 45 mile run to Papanoa to fish virgin waters, and found 2 roosterfish of almost 45 pounds, and 6 large jack Crevalle to 25 pounds. He then fished with fly fishing client Clay Danenhower of Bellingham WA and got several jacks on the fly at the white rocks.

Randy Lueth of Indiana got two sailfish on the fly, which we tagged and released. Plus, I also guided Natale Chiaudani of Italy for two days. On the fly, he hooked 5 sails and a striped marlin.

The red hot offshore bite continues in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo led by some wide openSAILFISH activity. Florida angler Mike Visocki fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 landed 35 SAILFISH in 6 days offshore Captain Cheva also posted a 3 SAILFISH day for angler Lee Southhall. Captain Adolofo Espinosa on the Dos Hermanos fishing 6 days with angler Mr Stuart, landed 23 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO, 4 WAHOO, 1 PAMPANO and 2 ROOSTERFISH. Captain Adolofo also took Angler Tod Fazekas to the Puerto Vincentee Guerrero area for 1 day of inshore fishing which saw Mr Fazekas Land 2 Big ROOSTERFISH to 70 Lbs and lost two others. Mr Fazekas also fished 4 days with Captain Luis on the Gran Jefe, transferrring 18 SAILFISH to the fly Landing 2. Mr Fazekas also posted 1 BLUE MARLIN, 2 DORADO as well as non stop light tackle fly action on big schools of Bonitos. Captain Chrio aboard the Bloody Hook posted a 4 SAILFISH day and an 8 SAILFISH day for Delaware anglers Mr Walker and his brother. Captain Chiro also posted a 4 SAILFISH , 1 DORADO day for returning angler Tracy Stoick and a 2 SAILFISH day for Anglers Jim and Jim Clancy Jr.. Captain Arturo on the Janeth Reported landing 5 SAILFISH, 35 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 1 AMBERJACK for Mr Dawson who fished a total of 3 days. Captain Arturo also reported 1 SAILFISH for fly angler Larry Cowles of the Silver Bow Fly Shop. Long Island Angler Joe Calandra fishing aboard the La Bamba with Captain Jose landed 5 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO on his first day offshore. Captain Jose also reported a 2 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO day for angler Mr Smith. Captain Candelerio on the Leydy reported 5 SAILFISH for French Angler Mr Theunis in two days and 2 SAILFISH, 2 YELLOWFIN TUNA, 5 SPANISH MACKERELS, 11 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 1 ROOSTERFISH in 5 days with angler Mr Hollmann. Captain Luis Salas on the Marea Azul posted a 4 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO day for Angler Mr Dittbrender. Captain Efraine reported a 6 SAILFISH day for returning angler Mr Jim Paulk. The super panga ' Angler ' reported landing 9 SAILFISH, loosing 11 Others as well as an estimate 250 lb Blue Marlin in 3 days of fishing The blue water is within a mile of the beach and the action last week was by dfar the most consistent of the season so far. The Inshore fishery has largely not received much fishing pressure because of the red hot offshore bite.
