The steady improvement in fishing continued last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Returning angler Mr. Morrison posted an estimated 350 lb Blue MARLIN and 3 Sailfish in one day while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 with Captain Adolofo. Mr. Morrison also recorded several other nice Sailfish and Dorado in a few offshore days and 4 Big Roosterfish to 55 lbs all with Captain’s Adolofo and Cheva. Captain Adolofo also reported some incredible Spansih mackerel fishing north at La Saladitas on MEGA BAIT lures. IN total he landed 90 Spanish mackerel from 8 - 12 lbs and 25 Yellowtail Jacks to 25 lbs in 2 inshore days. Mr. Benson’s group fishing aboard the super pangas, Janeth, Secuestro, Marfel, Tijerta, Fish on , and Llamarada reported 22 SAILFISH and 21 nice Dorado in 4 days of fishing. Captain Chiro on the Bloody Hook recorded 1 Striped Marlin as well as 1 Sailfish and 2 Dorado in 3 days offshore. The Duquesa, fishing with returning angler Mr Birkholtz reported 3 Sailfish and 2 Dorado in 2 offshore days. The blue water is within 7 miles and the sea conditions were near perfect.

NOVEMBER 16, 2007

A dramatic turn around in water temperature and sea conditions brought the return of good offshore and inshore action last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Captain Adolofo on the Dos Hermanos 1 reported 5 ROOSTERFISH, 64 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 8 SPANISH MACKEREL, 3 SAILFISH and 2 DORADO in 6 days of fishing with French Client Mr. Senouf. Captain Cheva on the Dos Hermanos 2 reported a 2 SAILFISH day. Captain Temo Verboonen on the Secuestro reported 4 ROOSTERFISH and 4 DORADO in 2 days of fishing and Captain Candelerio on the Leydy reported 4 SAILFISH in 2 offshore days. The captain reported big numbers of baitfish all around the area and the blue warm water has moved within 5 miles of the bay. Calmer inshore water also allowed the captain to fish the more productive areas for Roosterfish and Jacks. With the prediction of more seasonable weather in the weeks ahead we hopeful for a great start to this year’s fall season.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Sunny Mild temps

Sea Conditions: Calm

Bait Supply: excellent

OCTOBER 18, 2007

Stormy conditions and light angler activity was reported last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Returning angler, Mary Peachin, who landed 13 Roosterfish in one day with Captain Adolofo took no mercy on the inshore game fish as she followed up her first day performance by landing 20 Roosterfish on her second day. This was the highest single Roosterfish day reported by Captain Adolofo. Most of the action took place south of Petitland beach. Captain Adolfo returned to the same are the very next day only to find one small roosterfish will to strike. Large numbers of Bonito are being reported all along the coast. Offshore a single Striped Marlin of 40 lbs was reported as was a single 200 Lb Blue Marlin. The sailfish continue to be absent and the offshore action is being dominated by Dorado. Captain Jamie on the 35’ Bertram Orion reported landing 2 nice Dorado for angler Mr. Briche. The Blue water remains close but rough sea conditions and unsettled weather made for difficult fishing conditions.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Stormy

Sea Conditions: Rough

Bait Supply: Fair

Although weather improved dramatically last week, very little angling activity was reported. Those few boats which went offshore reported a good Dorado Bite with averages between 6 - 7 fish per day and the size remains good -- in the 25 - 40 lb class. The Sailfish activity slowed as the on-again off-again pattern continues to be the norm for this season. Inshore, the mountain rains have swelled the rivers bringing in brown water which have been pushed all along the coast. This condition has all but shut down the inshore fishing for last week.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Humid with temps in the 90’s

Sea Conditions: Calm to moderate

Bait Supply: Good

Sincerely,

Stan Lushinsky

Early in the week, the blue marlin continued their very unusual showing this summer. We are averaging about 3 to 4 hooked blues a day for the 10 boat fleet. Sailfish are doing well also, with a two to three fish per boat average.

Tuesday was my son's 13th birthday and went out with Captain Cali to try for the 50 to 80 pound yellowfin tuna, which have been active at the 1,000 fathom line (30 miles). We started trolling at 16 miles and were hooked up within 5 minutes. I had set out a 40 pound outfit for tuna and dorado, and an 80 pound outfit for marlin. Wouldn't you know it, the blue hit the 40 pound outfit? Happens every time.

Fortunately the blue was small and a little over an hour later my son, Ken, had the estimate 200 pound marlin released.

From 5:00 in the evening Wednesday until 5:00 in the evening on Thursday, we got rain. Seven and a half inches of rain! It was the remnants of hurricane Dean, which had crossed over from the Caribbean side, shutting down all fishing for two days.

The large volume of rain has dirtied up the inshore from the outpouring of the rivers, and the roosterfish bite will probably not get going again for a few more days.

Unsettled weather late this week made fishing fairly tough. We had very little rain, but the port was closed on Friday due to wind conditions.

Prior to the barometer taking a nose dive, the sailfish action was averaging about 1 to 2 fish per boat/day.

Also early in the week the 60 to 80 pound yellowfin tuna had made a very good showing at the 1,000 fathom line (30 miles), with the bite lasting until the port closure.
Plus, for the boats who traveled the distance for the tuna, the sailfish action was much better than the boats who stayed in the traditional 10 to 14 mile areas.

There was not much action on roosters early this week, and the unsettled weather prevented anybody looking for them later.

Zihuatanejo, Mainland Mexico [/b]

The small yellowfin tuna are still around the six mile mark and they are keeping the blue marlin around. These small tuna are only about 4 or 5 pounds, and are candy for the big blues. Several more blues were hooked this week.

The larger yellowfin are still out beyond the 32 mile area of the 1,000 fathom curve.

A few dorado are showing this week, and hopefully these are the leaders of the September mass migration we get about every 4 years. When the migration happens, a 100 dorado a day is not unreasonable: unless you get tired and quit before then.

The roosterfish bite is still awesome, and an excellent opportunity for a fly rodder to get in on the action.

The outstanding inshore action is still holding up for the roosters and jack crevalle. The roosterfish are averaging between 30 and 40 pounds, with a few fish taken this week estimated to be in the 60 to 75 pound class. Some of the jacks have tipped the scales at 25 pounds, but most are averaging about 15 pounds.

The full moon has the blue water fishing a bit on the slow side, but a few people were surprised by the huge blue marlin making another show this summer. Adan, on the panga Gitana II, was back at the dock with his client by 10:20 in the morning having caught and released a sailfish and an estimated 450 pound blue marlin. The client was worn out and had enough for the day.

A few other blues were hooked this week, and the sailfish are averaging about two fish per boat per day.

The 60 to 80 pound yellowfin tuna are at the 35 mile mark.

JULY 20, 2007

A storm riddled week hampered fishing in the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area last week. High winds along with torrential rains made inshore fishing as difficult as one can imagine. Claudio Tagini and film crew of American Western Adventures fishing out of the Casa Las Brisas in Puerto Vincentee Guerrero for 4 days aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 landed 8 ROOSTERFISH to 50 lbs along with a handful a nice sized Yellowtail Jacks and Spanish Mackerel. The fishing was extremely difficult as the large surf coupled with muddy water made for a challenging mix. The weather forced an end to fishing on most day by mid to late morning. Offshore our captains are reporting more marlin than Sailfish. Some school Yellowfin tuna to 30 lb are also being reported. The blue water is beyond the 20 mile mark.

Conditions have improved this week, with the inshore action for roosters being phenomenal. The boats are each averaging between 7 and 8 roosters a day! Plus, that does not count an almost equal number of the hard fighting jack crevalle. The jacks are averaging between 12 and 16 pounds, with the roosters averaging a whopping 30 to 40 pounds.

It really does not matter if you go North or South out of Zihuatanejo Bay, all the beaches are producing jacks and roosters. Also, with most of the fish being taken on surface poppers, it is an ideal situation for the fly caster. The same popper, with the hooks taken off, makes an excellent teaser to bring the rooster to the boat, and well within fly casting distance.
