Tofino B.C. Vancouver Island May Report

May 15th Sport Fishing update Tofino/Clayoquot Sound B.C.

With recent weather patterns providing a day to day mix of all types, springtime conditions may be a little delayed, but not totally abnormal.
Also a little later than normal, the Tofino sport fishing conditions and opportunities for Chinook Salmon and Halibut were slowed a bit by the mixed weather conditions, as well as the anticipated wait for the first strong runs of transient Chinook Salmon heading south past the coastline of Clayoquot Sound. The springtime waiting game is over on many fronts, with timely indicators prevalent in many areas both on land and sea. During the same time that local Cherry trees blossom, and the Black bears roam the hillsides and beaches in search of their spring forage, there are also many ocean indicators that help notify anglers that the “Spring Season” is upon us. Local Fishermen know the Salmon are here or near when current indicators at sea are so obvious. Acres upon acres of Krill or Plankton a short distance offshore have created massive clouds of the nutrient rich base food source for most local aquatic species. Amazing numbers of Humpback whales, marine mammals and birds, as well as aggressively feeding Chinook salmon, Halibut and various other fish species are currently enjoying one of nature’s best spring-time offerings. On a very positive note, there have been reports from many areas of the coast that the plankton abundance is extremely strong, supporting many marine species.
Over the past week in the Tofino/ Clayoquot Sound area, Chinook salmon fishing has increased dramatically, with consistent action and catches for those to enjoy the best tasting salmon of the season. Most Chinook Salmon have been caught offshore from Tofino approximately 4-6 miles, while trolling near clouds of bait like the pre-mentioned Plankton, as well schools of commonly abundant Needlefish. On the tougher weather days, the salmon fishing inshore has been very good as well, with spots very near Tofino harbour, creating close and reliable option. The offshore areas for Salmon fishing have also been hot spots for Halibut fishing, with many Halibut being caught while trolling for Salmon. To catch Halibut this way is not uncommon, especially when trolling with baits like Anchovies or Herring near the bottom. Coho Salmon are also starting to show up, with these likely being the start of the Columbia River summer run of Coho that is anticipated to be extremely strong over the next three to Four months.

With nature serving up a mixed bag of weather as we approach summer, it is much easier to take with the great fishing we have been waiting for, and the great fishing forecast ahead for the 2009 season.
Don’t hesitate to contact us for further details and information for your next fishing adventure in the Tofino area.

Mexico Bass

The week of November 9-16, Chris and I spent 6 long days (10 hour fishing days) on Lake Baccarac on the west coast of Mexico. Lake Baccarac is noted for it's 10 pound plus largemouth bass. We didn't get a 10 pounder, but we came close.....

Not bad for your first Mexican bass, 7 1/2 pounder

My largest, a 7 1/2 pound bass

Our largest... 9 3/4 pound Mexican Bass

The 'small' 2 to 5 pound fish were no where to be found. Where the week before, everyone was catching 50 fish a day with bunches of those in the 9 to 12 pound range.... the week we were there only the big ones were around. And not that many of them. I caught a total of 6 bass and Chris landed 13.... all week.

You would make 1000 casts a day and be lucky to catch one or two fish.
But you have to admit, that the one fish you did catch was a good one.

I spoke to two guys at the airport who had fished Lake Huites that week and averaged 50 to 60 bass a day... (loosing 20 to 30 that came un buttoned) but their largest was only 7 pounds. Most of their fish ran 2 to 5 pounds. Lake Huites is noted for large numbers of fish, but smaller. Lake Baccarac is the place to go for that 10 pound bass

Even though the fishing was very, very slow, and we didn't catch nearly as many fish as we expected..... Chris is already planning his next trip to Lake Baccarac. Seems he's been bitten by that '10 pound bass bug'. LOL
Aloha,
Stan

caught this 44.40 , 44 inch , 30 inch girth Black drum from shore in Mississippi on 8-26-07 using Berkley Gulp 'molting' shrimp under a cork on light tackle and 12 lb test line....
We had a few other good hits and another was almost brought in before he jumped off the hook.
we also caught alot of croaker, pin fish and piggy fish, but no others that were of legal size.. this is what we would call a good day on the shore!

At the beginning of March the Blind Strike was at the Similan Islands were we had excellent time with huge balls of Yellowfin which kept our guests fully busy all day long. We also had a bite from a Black which did not give us even the time to enjoy it that was already gone!

We then moved to the Andaman Islands in India till the end of the month for two consecutive sessions of our famous “Popping&Jigging” expeditions. And the Andamans confirmed and even exceeded our expectations in some cases, with no-stop action from dawn to dusk (or better all day long sometimes since some of our guests had barely few hours of rest every night!). Huge Groupers and Yellowfin, Red Bass and Dogtooth Tuna together with Barracuda, Wahoo, Sharks of different species and a variety of bottom dwellers of the most different sizes, colours and shapes were on the menu. GTs were numerous and among them some beauties will remain for long time in the memories of all our guests. They proved again to be the star of the trip with some spectacular strikes and fights which confirm them as the ultimate fighter pound for pound. Finally during the transfer from one spot to another we even manage to catch a Black Marlin which unfortunately, since badly injured, we were unable to release. This one, another one lost on the way to the Andamans together with other reports from other sportfishing boats confirm our thoughts according to which this place has huge potential as Billfishing destination. For the adventurous anglers this is truly one of the ultimate frontier; we barely saw a boat during our stay in those waters and we really hope they will remain as they are for long time. Moreover the area is so vast (more than 8,200 sq km) that it can offer to the returning anglers always new and sometimes unexplored fishing ground, both to the popping and jigging enthusiasts or to the big nose lovers. In conclusion I don’t think that it happens everyday to fish waters which on the map are showed as “unchartered” and I still believe that every keen fishermen should give it a try once in a lifetime!
We are already receiving booking enquiries for the 2007 season, so I suggest to every interested angler to contact us as soon as possible to be part of one of next year Special Safari Expeditions to the magical Andaman Islands.

Tofino, B.C. Spring Steelhead and Chinook Salmon

After the continuous storms and extreme wet weather in the Tofino B.C. area on Vancouver Island's west coast, things are looking a lot more like spring time is getting closer.
There is no doubt that the recent moisture and cool weather combined, have been beneficial for the coastal mountains of Vancouver Island. Whether your concern is for Salmon fry survival in the small coastal streams, or for a potential shortage in the water supply for Tofino's busy tourism economy, the healthy looking snow pack is a welcoming site.
A recent day Steelhead fishing on a Vancouver Island river was fantastic all around. The need for sunglasses in February, and releasing bright wild Steelhead has a way of reviving (and drying out) the senses after a long stretch of wet winter. Gear of choice for the day to match clear water conditions was #2 silver Colorado Blade on a long 8 lb. leader, and a #2 purple articulate egg leech fished with a 250 gr. Head with my 7/8 wt. two hander. Most river levels have dropped down to beautiful conditions, allowing for bank and boat access for many anglers, and as most know, February is a prime month for winter Steelhead on most Vancouver Island river systems. The smaller west draining systems along the outer coast of Vancouver Island usually see the main Steelhead runs returning in conjunction with spring time snow melt and run-off, often in mid March through late April. This is always the best opportunity to connect with fresh spring Steelhead on the fly in the Tofino area.
Ironically, this same time is usually the real start of great saltwater fishing opportunities for Halibut and Chinook Salmon on Vancouver Island's west coast. Some local anglers refuse to wait it out for another month, and have been fishing the protected inshore waters of Tofino/Clayoquot Sound for scrappy winter Chinook in the 6-25lb. range. There have been very few windows of opportunity to fish the offshore waters from Tofino, but these great fishing areas will be more and more accessible with each passing week as we escape the winter storm season. This weeks forecast looks to provide some access for offshore fishing for Chinook and Halibut, so check with us at www.tofinofishing.com for updates.
The Herring are starting to show up in the traditional inlet areas of Clayoquot Sound, and the Chinook salmon and Halibut will be following this main food source through their spawning cycle.
For great springtime Steelhead, Halibut and Chinook salmon opportunities, check out Vancouver Island's west coast. Consider www.tofinofishing.com as your reliable resource for planning your next trip.

High & Dry in Costa Rica

Just thought these pics were interesting enough to post. This yacht was run aground the day prior to me taking the photogs. As we approached we witnessed 5 commercial panga style boats fleeing the scene with the loot that they had been stripping/salvaging from the wreck. Apparently maritime law allows this to take place legally if the boat is abandoned as this one had been even though this was a fresh accident? They should have left someone with the vessel to keep guard. What a shame!

This was in Costa Rica on the Pacific side way to the North only about 12 miles from the Nicaraguan boarder. The ship ran aground on the Southern most Island of the Bat Island chain (Isla Piedra Negra is the Island just outside Bahia Potrero Grande). I wonder if the owner ever got it off the rocks?? It was 2 days before Thanksgiving of this year 2002.

We continued on up to the 'Bats' and had fantastic action on the Roosters catching and releasing nine 30-40 lb. bruisers in two hours. Lost about another half dozen to the rocks. We were slow trolling live bridled 'Look Downs' for bait and they are really nice hearty baits that swim great in the pattern. They are very shiny putting off a lot of flash when being trolled and the Roosters seem to think they are candy. We were running one off the starboard rigger on the surface and one off of a Z-wing planner off the port corner. Our success rate was pretty close to 50/50 between the two positions with maybe a slight advantage coming from the baits being run on the surface.

The Papagayo winds were absolutely snorting making running offshore not an option this day. That's OK because the Rooster fishing on the inside was as good as it gets!

U.S. zoo investigates "virgin" shark birth

OMAHA (Reuters) - Unraveling the mysterious "virgin" birth of a bonnethead shark in Nebraska last month should make an "interesting research paper," a zoo director said on Friday.

The trio of female bonnethead sharks living in a tank at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha "have never been even close to a male bonnethead shark since they arrived as 2 to 3-pound (1 to 1.4 kg) pups," zoo director Lee Simmons said.

There is a male epaulet shark in the same tank, but it is a different species than the bonnethead, which is a smaller version of the hammerhead shark, and would correspond to "a Chihuahua impregnating a Saint Bernard," Simmons said.

DNA tests were begun this week on tissue and blood samples taken from the 3-year-old female bonnetheads and the pup, which died five hours after it was born on Dec. 14 after being bitten by a stingray that lives in the same tank.

Several weeks of testing will be needed to determine which shark was the mother and who might have fathered the pup.

Though sperm can survive inside a shark's reproductive tract for months or even years, asexual reproduction is unheard of in sharks, Simmons said.

"We want to know if there was a father or if there was a weird hybridization of species. It will make a damn interesting research paper," he said.
